Using geospatial data without creating new data silos

Whether it’s customers, locations, supply chains, sales territories, infrastructure, or risks: a large portion of business-relevant data has a spatial component. In modern data organizations, however, traditional GIS environments quickly reach their limits.

Typical challenges:

  • Geodata is stored in separate systems and data silos.
  • Large volumes of data are difficult to process in a scalable manner.
  • Additional GIS infrastructures increase complexity and costs.
  • Redundant data storage complicates governance and keeps data up to date.
  • Spatial analyses are often accessible only to GIS experts.
  • Results do not reach business units and decision-makers where they are needed.

CARTO brings spatial analytics directly into your existing cloud data architecture. This makes location intelligence an integral part of your data processes - and makes it available exactly where decisions are made.

CARTO: Cloud-Native and Agentic GIS

CARTO combines spatial analysis, visualization, data enrichment, application development, and AI agents in a single platform. Analyses run directly on existing cloud data platforms such as BigQuery, Snowflake, or Databricks. This largely eliminates the need for additional GIS data silos and time-consuming data copies.

Agentic GIS further simplifies access to spatial analysis. Users can formulate questions in natural language and access defined data, tools, and workflows, rather than having to use complex GIS tools. This makes location intelligence accessible not only to GIS experts but also to data teams, business units, and decision-makers.

An Overview of CARTO's Key Features

  • AI Agents: Ask Questions Instead of Using Complex Tools: With CARTO AI Agents, you can address spatial questions using natural language. The agents access shared data, tools, and workflows and deliver answers, analyses, or maps directly based on your data.
  • CARTO Builder: Visualizing Insights: With CARTO Builder, you can create interactive maps and dashboards directly from the data in your warehouse—without extensive development and even with very large data sets. The visualizations can also be integrated into existing applications.
  • CARTO Workflows: Automate Spatial Analyses: With the low-code interface, you can prepare, link, and analyze data via drag-and-drop. Workflows can be automated, scheduled, or triggered via APIs and enhanced with ML and GenAI components.
  • CARTO for Developers: Develop Your Own Applications: APIs and libraries enable the development of customized location intelligence applications. They can be flexibly integrated into existing technology stacks and are designed for high-performance visualization of large data sets.
  • Data Observatory: Enrich Your Business Data in a Targeted Way: With the CARTO Data Observatory, you can supplement your own data with external datasets—for example, on demographics, points of interest, mobility, weather, or the environment. This reveals new correlations and provides additional insights for informed decision-making.

The result: CARTO brings analysis to the data—and GIS to the people who use it to make decisions. Complex spatial processes can be defined by experts and then utilized by a significantly larger number of users within the organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • CARTO is a cloud-native location intelligence platform that directly connects spatial analytics with modern cloud data platforms. While traditional desktop GIS solutions are often geared toward local data processing and specialized GIS workflows, CARTO enables scalable analysis of large data sets, automated workflows, and collaboration across different teams. For companies with existing cloud data infrastructures in particular, CARTO thus offers a flexible complement or alternative to traditional GIS systems.

  • CARTO can be connected to Google BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift, Oracle, and PostgreSQL, among others. Spatial analyses can be performed directly on the data in these systems without the need to set up a separate GIS database. We’ll help you integrate CARTO into your existing cloud architecture.

  • CARTO accesses data directly from your existing cloud data warehouse. A permanent copy of the connected raw data in a separate CARTO database is generally not required. However, temporary caches may be used for processing and visualization. In addition, CARTO stores platform-specific information such as maps and workflows. Which data is processed and stored where also depends on the selected deployment option.

  • Yes. CARTO is not intended exclusively for GIS specialists or developers. With CARTO Builder, you can create interactive maps and dashboards without extensive programming. CARTO Workflows enables the visual creation of spatial analysis processes. Additionally, AI Agents can simplify access to geodata by allowing users to ask questions in natural language. Professional development tools are also available for complex integrations and custom applications.

  • With CARTO AI Agents, users can formulate geographic queries in natural language—for example, regarding the accessibility of locations, the distribution of customers, or regional market potential. The AI agents can access configured data sources, analysis tools, and workflows to generate appropriate analyses and visualizations. The functions and data that an agent is permitted to use can be specifically configured. This allows companies to make recurring geographic queries accessible to different departments.

  • Yes. CARTO offers APIs and development tools that allow maps, visualizations, and spatial analyses to be integrated into existing applications. For example, maps from CARTO Builder can be embedded in websites and dashboards. For more complex requirements, custom web applications can be developed using CARTO as the technical foundation. We support you both with integration and with the development of customized location intelligence solutions.

  • The cost of CARTO depends, among other factors, on the selected licensing model, the scope of use, and the required features. CARTO offers both usage-based billing models and enterprise licensing models with agreed-upon usage quotas. Additional costs may apply for the cloud data platform used and any supplementary services. As an exclusive CARTO partner for the DACH region, we’ll help you select the right license and estimate the total costs.

  • You can start by getting to know CARTO during a free 30-day trial. Together, we can evaluate specific use cases and implement them in a proof of concept. In doing so, we’ll assess technical feasibility, the availability of suitable data, and the potential business value. Based on this, we’ll develop a suitable architecture as needed and support you from the initial integration through to production deployment.
