Precise Photovoltaic Planning on the Web: A Modular Map Solution for SOLARSCHMIEDE

How SOLARSCHMIEDE, supported by Ubilabs, brings visual roof planning onto the map, making it radically simple

Photovoltaic planning is a highly precise process. SOLARSCHMIEDE Software GmbH, based in Munich, has been a pioneer in this field for over 20 years, providing solutions for the simulation and calculation of complex photovoltaic systems.

What began as a specialized desktop application must now succeed in a digitalized world: customers demand high-performance, browser-based tools. In close collaboration, Ubilabs and SOLARSCHMIEDE developed a modular map solution that allows roof planning to be carried out directly on the map.

The Challenge: Overcoming Technological Limitations

For a long time, SOLARSCHMIEDE relied on native map-based applications. However, with increasing customer requirements for web applications, the existing structures reached their limits. Technologically, the team was heavily tied to standard map APIs. Special requests such as customized zoom levels or shifting individual modules could not be optimally mapped. Instead of laboriously developing the underlying technology for map interaction in-house, SOLARSCHMIEDE looked for a partner to handle this complexity.

Modular Map Solution for Complex Planning Steps

In close cooperation, Ubilabs and SOLARSCHMIEDE developed a modular map component based on Angular. The focus was not on a rigid end product, but on a flexible building block that integrates seamlessly into various customer environments.

The goal of the development was to provide users with a tool that radically simplifies complex photovoltaic planning. Based on a map, roof areas can be drawn precisely; individual cutouts can then be defined with just a few clicks.

The technological highlights of the solution:

  • Modular Architecture: The component integrates seamlessly into the existing infrastructure via its own API. All elements can be customized to match the corporate design of the respective B2B clients.
  • Powerful Map Base: Various basemaps can be utilized based on Maplibre. The solution allows for deep zooming and the display of numerous information layers.
  • Precision via SVG Editor: Users can draw roof areas directly on the map. An integrated SVG editor allows for the definition of cutouts for roof windows or chimneys with just a few clicks.
  • Intelligent Drawing: By combining familiar interaction patterns from vector drawing tools with the map as a planning foundation, roof drawing becomes exceptionally simple and precise. For example, edges automatically align with existing lines (snapping).

Practical Implementation: Two Success Stories

The versatility of this modular approach is demonstrated by its application across different market segments:

  • Solution for a Leading Inverter Manufacturer: A web application was realized for this client to enable rapid roof planning. Here, the focus is on intuitive user guidance to establish a valid planning foundation within the shortest time possible.
  • Solution for Mounting System Manufacturer SL Rack: In contrast, SL Rack required exceptionally high precision for technical planning. The map component provides a level of detail down to the exact positioning of roof hooks. The result is an automated, highly accurate bill of materials (BOM) that can be used directly for installation.
The modular map solution makes roof planning exceptionally fast, simple, and intuitive.

Success through Partnership

The collaboration has shown that combining specialized domain knowledge with external technology expertise significantly accelerates the market launch of new features. SOLARSCHMIEDE has successfully detached itself from technological dependencies and created a future-proof web architecture that meets the high demands of the solar industry today and tomorrow.

The project is already in its next phase: additional features are currently being developed to make the digital planning of photovoltaic systems even more efficient.

  • Right from the initial discussions, it became clear that Ubilabs quickly grasped our professional and technical requirements. Instead of lengthy coordination rounds, a constructive dialogue about potential solutions emerged immediately. This combination of technical understanding, a pragmatic approach, and a partnership-based collaboration contributed significantly to the project's success.
