Frequent questions about digital fire station location planning

Are the software's calculations legally compliant for the fire protection requirements plan?
Our software is based on precise routing algorithms that take real road networks and traffic rules into account. It enables the precise adjustment of parameters such as turnout times (gear-up times), dispatch times, and specific vehicle speeds, as required by the AGBF (Working Group of Professional Fire Department Chiefs) or state laws. The results serve as a valid, data-driven basis for political decisions and requirement plans.

How does the tool differ from traditional traffic studies?
A classic study is a snapshot in time, involves a lengthy process, and is cost-intensive. Our tool is a dynamic planning environment that gives you results in minutes. You can simulate scenarios ("What if we close Station A and relocate Station B?") in real time and see the result (the isochrones) immediately on the map. This saves months of waiting time and external consulting costs when conditions change.

Which data are used for the accessibility analysis?
We use up-to-date routing graphs (e.g., HERE, TomTom, or OpenStreetMap), which can include not only distances but also average travel speeds, turn restrictions for large vehicles, and historical traffic data (rush hour vs. night). This allows the response time to be modeled realistically, rather than just as a theoretical radius ("as the crow flies").

Can we export the results to GIS systems?
Yes. Since we know that municipalities often work with ESRI or open-source GIS, the calculated coverage areas and analyses can be exported (e.g., as GeoJSON or Shapefile). This ensures the tool integrates seamlessly into your city's existing geodata infrastructure.

Is the software only suitable for professional fire departments or also for volunteer fire departments?
The tool is scalable for both structures. For the Basel Fire Department, for example, our tool takes into account both professional fire departments and the so-called militia fire departments (volunteer fire departments). In doing so, not only the stations but also the home and work locations of the emergency personnel are factored in. This allows for the realistic simulation of travel-to-station, dressing, and gear-up times.
