Mokli: a Guide for Young People Seeking Help

An Interactive Map for Street and Refugee Children

Mokli: A multilingual app to support young people in need throughout Germany

The KARUNA charity in Berlin supports children and young people in difficult life situations. As well as offering counselling and support, KARUNA also seeks to empower the children and young people concerned to organize their own short-term help in emergency situations. To make this option available quickly and easily all over Germany, the charity has joined forces with Ubilabs to develop an interactive map on which all the important drop-in centers in the whole of Germany can be found.

A non-bureaucratic guide for isolated young people

The KARUNA charity in Berlin supports children and young people in difficult life situations. As well as offering counselling and support, KARUNA also seeks to empower the children and young people concerned to organize their own short-term help in emergency situations. To make this option available quickly and easily all over Germany, the charity has joined forces with Ubilabs to develop an interactive map on which all the important drop-in centers in the whole of Germany can be found.

MOKLI: An interactive map in four languages

MOKLI, the aid platform for young runaways, offers guidance to street children and unaccompanied refugees under the age of eighteen in an increasingly complex system of aid provision. The interactive map on the mobile website makes it very easy to find advice centers and emergency shelters, soup kitchens or daycare facilities in the immediate vicinity. Filters make the search easier; for example, there are emergency shelters that are reserved only for girls and women. Young people in need are being involved in the development of the app to ensure that its functionality is directly tailored to the needs of the users.

One important point that quickly emerged in the collaboration with the young people was that the site should load quickly and take up little data volume. It also needs to be particularly intuitive and easy to understand, which is why self-explanatory icons should be used instead of long texts. Naturally the mobile site is also available in multiple languages.

Sponsored by Google - implemented by Ubilabs

The project is being financed using prize money from the Google Impact Challenge, which subsidizes digital projects run by NGOs. Ubilabs is responsible for the technical implementation of the mobile site, which is based on Google Maps. This includes the development of a content management system (CMS), which the association can use to generate and maintain the information itself and to take care of the technical design of the site and the interactive map, and, ultimately, also the programming.
